Yasmin is one of the newer forms of combined oral contraception for women, part of a group of tablets often referred to as ‘the pill’. Effective in approximately 99% of cases, Yasmin can provide fast and effective protection against unwanted pregnancy.
Like most forms of oral contraception, this contraceptive pill contains synthetic reproductions of the two hormones that control the female menstrual cycle and prepare the body for pregnancy. By taking Yasmin for 21 out of 28 days, women can enjoy a healthy sex life with complete peace of mind.
Yasmin is a combined oral contraceptive pill that greatly reduces the likelihood of becoming pregnant during sexual intercourse. In clinical studies, less than 1% of women using Yasmin fell pregnant – a figure which could be reduced even further by complementing the birth control pill with forms of barrier contraception.
Simply put, whilst Yasmin is not 100% effective, it is the best protection currently available other than sterilisation.
Occasionally, the tablet is prescribed for women who suffer from heavy or particularly painful periods, since the hormonal adjustment results in lighter bleeding. Taking Yasmin also helps to regulate periods and ensure that they occur at the same time each month.
Every month, the female body goes through a menstrual cycle, which helps to prepare for possible pregnancy. Halfway through this 28 day cycle, an egg is released from one of the two ovaries and, if sperm manages to reach an egg in the fallopian tube, pregnancy can occur. If the egg is not fertilised by the end of the 28 day cycle, a period occurs, removing the egg along with the lining of the womb itself.
Two hormones within the female body, oestrogen and progesterone, control the menstrual cycle and the ongoing process of pregnancy. When a female becomes pregnant, it is oestrogen and progesterone that stop more eggs from being released and stop the woman from conceiving again.
Yasmin pills contain ethinylestradiol and drospirenone, which are synthetic versions of oestrogen and progesterone respectively. These hormones fool the body, meaning that it does not release an egg, the fluid in the neck of the womb thickens so that sperm cannot enter and the lining of the womb does not thicken enough to support to growth of an egg.
Yasmin can be prescribed to all women over the age of 18 who are looking for a long-term contraceptive solution. The tablet dramatically decreases the likelihood of falling pregnant and allows women to exert more control over their sex lives.
Yasmin is not offered to women under the age of 18, or any woman who is currently pregnant or breast-feeding. In addition, this drug is not to be used by women with a history of circulation problems, heart valve problems, unusual vaginal bleeding, breast or uterine cancer, adrenal gland disorders, migraines, high blood pressure or kidney or liver disease.
Yasmin is prescribed in a 3mg/30mcg dosage, meaning that each tablet contains 3mg of drospirenone and 30mcg of ethinylestradiol. The packaging of the pills features days of the week to assist with taking the tablet regularly.
Patients should ideally aim to begin taking Yasmin on the first day of their period, which marks the start of your 28 day menstrual cycle. After this, you should take one tablet each day at approximately the same time, following the arrows on the packaging until all 21 tablets have been taken. This leaves you with a seven day period in which you should not take the pill and in which you may experience light bleeding. You will still be protected against pregnancy for these 7 days, after which you should resume taking the next course.
If you miss a single dose of this pill (ie. one day), take the missed tablet as soon as possible and then resume your normal dosage from the next day. If you miss any more than one dose, you should take your last missed dose immediately and then resume taking the tablet as normal.
If you miss more than one dose, you will not be protected against pregnancy for the next seven days. If you have less than seven pills left, you should finish the pack and start the next one immediately, missing your seven day break. If you have seven or more pills left, you should finish the pack before having your usual break and starting the next course.
Some side effects may occur when taking Yasmin, as with any prescription medication. These side effects may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, headaches, changes in body weight and breast tenderness or enlargement. In many cases these side effects disappear over time, but if you are concerned about any side effects that you experience when taking Yasmin, contact your doctor.
