Designed to be a one-stop solution for traveller’s diarrhoea, our Traveller’s Diarrhoea Treatment Pack contains two medicines to fight against this common condition. The pack contains ciprofloxacin, a powerful antibiotic that treats the underlying cause of the diarrhoea, as well as loperamide that can reduce the severity of symptoms.
Traveller’s diarrhoea is a remarkably common condition, thought to affect between 20% and 50% of all international travellers every year. Usually, the illness is caused by undercooked food, food prepared in unhygienic conditions, or water that has been contaminated. This can result in symptoms including a high temperature, abdominal cramps, and loose, watery and frequent bowel movements.
Be prepared for the onset of this common illness with our comprehensive Traveller’s Diarrhoea Treatment Pack.
Our Traveller’s Diarrhoea Treatment Pack contains two medicines – ciprofloxacin and loperamide.
Ciprofloxacin is an effective antibiotic that helps the body to fight off the bacteria that causes diarrhoea. By taking this tablet as instructed at the first sign of symptoms, recovery time can be reduced from as much as a week to as little as 24 hours.
However, even one day can seem too much to waste when you are only overseas for a short period of time. To help you make the most of your trip, our pack also includes loperamide, a medicine that reduces the frequency of bowel movements and enables you to venture out into the world without the fear of hurried toilet stops.
Of course, the key benefit of our Traveller’s Diarrhoea Pack is that both of these medicines are included in one convenient kit that is quick and easy to order online.
Traveller’s diarrhoea is caused by a bacterial infection. When bacteria enter the body, they begin to grow and reproduce, resulting in gradually increasing severity of symptoms. The body’s immune system naturally attempts to fight off the bacteria, but this can take a long time if no additional help is offered.
Ciprofloxacin is this additional help. It is an antibiotic that inhibits the enzyme that bacteria needs to reproduce, and as a result reduces recovery time dramatically.
In all cases and types of diarrhoea, frequent and loose bowel movements are a significant inconvenience that can make going about your daily routine difficult. In the case of overseas travel, there is even more motivation to reduce the symptoms of diarrhoea.
Loperamide acts upon the opioid receptors in the intestines, reducing the frequency of intestinal contractions. As a result, faecal matter moves through the gut at a slower rate, allowing more fluid to be absorbed back into the body, and reducing the number of bowel movements per day.
Ciprofloxacin and loperamide can both be used by adults and children over the age of 4 who have noticed the first symptoms of traveller’s diarrhoea.
Ciprofloxacin is not usually offered to patients with a history of tendon disorders caused by previous antibiotic use, or those who may be allergic to other quinolone-type antibiotics. In addition, this medicine may be unsuitable for use in patients with severe kidney function impairment, epilepsy, muscle weakness or heart disease.
Loperamide should not be used by any patient who has stools that are black, bloody or tarry.
Neither medicine should usually be used by women who are breast-feeding or pregnant.
Your Traveller’s Diarrhoea pack will contain ten 500mg ciprofloxacin tablets, one of which should be taken as soon as symptoms appear. Be sure to take the tablet using clean water, ideally bottled water if available.
This high-dose tablet should effectively rid your body of the illness within 24 hours.
In the vast majority of cases, ciprofloxacin does not result in any side effects, although some patients have reported headaches, joint or back pain, insomnia and dizziness. If you are concerned about these side effects, contact your doctor.
In some very rare circumstances, patients using antibiotics have encountered shortness of breath, muscle pain, an increases heart rate or disturbances in smell. If these symptoms occur, seek medical attention immediately.
Your Traveller’s Diarrhoea pack will contain thirty 2mg loperamide tablets.
You should take a dose of 4mg as soon as symptoms begin, then continue to take 2mg after each bowel movement, not exceeding 16mg per day. You can continue to take loperamide for anything up to 5 days.
Loperamide is usually free from side effects, but as with any medicine, some people may encounter adverse reactions. These could include dizziness, drowsiness, stomach pain or vomiting. If you are concerned about these side effects, contact your doctor.
