Simvastatin

Simvastatin – Effective Treatment for High Cholesterol

Simvastatin is a prescription treatment for high cholesterol, which works to lower the cholesterol posing a threat of cardiovascular disease, especially in people with diabetes or high blood pressure. It can be prescribed as a tablet in a number of dosages, ranging from 10mg to 80mg.

A key factor in the risk associated with high cholesterol is lifestyle. If patients have a lack of exercise, an unhealthy diet featuring high amounts of saturated fat, are obese or regularly use alcohol, blood flow to the heart, brain and other organs can be affected. In these instances, a raised cholesterol level will further restrict blood flow and can potentially lead to heart disease, heart attacks, or strokes. Simvastatin works to lower the cholesterol levels in the blood stream and to reduce the risk of heart disease or a stroke.

Simvastatin Benefits

It is important to remember that, whilst Simvastatin can help to lower your cholesterol level, it is at its most effective alongside lifestyle changes as appropriate. A good diet with minimal saturated fats, regular exercise and alcohol consumption only within recommended limits is a vital element of managing high cholesterol.

However, this drug boasts impressive results. As an example, on a 10mg dosage daily, studies have shown that cholesterol reduction can be seen within a month. With continued usage, studies have shown that taking Simvastatin can reduce the risk of heart disease by approximately 10% after the first year, increasing to around 30% after three years.

There is also evidence to suggest that using Simvastatin can reduce the risk of heart disease where patients do not necessarily have a raised cholesterol level, but are deemed to be at moderate risk by other factors including age. It does this by stabilizing the rough patches (or plaques) inside the arteries to the heart, leading to less risk of thrombosis (a blood clot) being triggered.

Does Simvastatin Work And Lower Cholesterol Levels?

Cholesterol is produced in the liver, and some cholesterol, commonly known as ‘good cholesterol’ (high-density lipoprotein, or HDL cholesterol) is easily removed from the body on a day to day basis. High levels of HDL cholesterol are a good thing. However, high levels of ‘bad cholesterol’ (low-density lipoprotein, or LDL cholesterol) can cause fatty deposits to form within blood vessels, causing them to narrow and restrict blood flow. In effect, this dramatically increases the likelihood that patients suffering from high cholesterol will suffer from heart disease or a stroke.

Simvastatin is a type of drug known as a statin. What statins do is to inhibit the amount of cholesterol produced by the liver, reducing the risk of dangerous build ups that can collect in arteries. By restricting the amount of cholesterol in the blood stream, the medication allows for healthy blood flow and a reduced risk of heart disease or stroke.

It is also important to note that, whilst this drug reduces cholesterol production, there is no indication that cholesterol levels reach the point of being ‘too low’ with Simvastatin use.

Who Can Take Simvastatin?

Simvastatin is suitable for patients who are suffering from a high level of LDL cholesterol in the bloodstream and are identified to be at risk of heart disease. It is most effective where lifestyle changes are adopted to complement to effect of the tablet itself.

Who Should Not Take Simvastatin?

Whilst high alcohol intake can be a cause of increased cholesterol, Simvastatin is not recommended for use by those who drink to excess regularly. Equally, since statins have an effect upon the liver, Simvastatin should not be taken by individuals suffering from some types of liver or kidney disease,, though this would be determined by one of our doctors. Finally, the medication should not be used if you are pregnant or currently suffering from heart disease.

How To Take Simvastatin

Simvastatin should be taken once a day, usually beginning with a 10mg dosage which may be increased over time under direct instruction of a medical expert. It is also suggested that Simvastatin is taken in the evening where possible, with or without food.

Whilst taking this drug, it is recommended that you take regular blood tests in order to measure the effectiveness of the tablet. If combined with necessary lifestyle changes, you should see dramatic reductions in your current cholesterol level after approximately one month.

Simvastatin Side Effects

As with all prescription medications, there are some possible side effects that can occur whilst taking Simvastatin. In some cases, patients may experience headaches, mild muscular pain, nausea, stomach pain, constipation, a skin rash or cold or flu-like symptoms including a sore throat. However, these side effects are not common with lower dosages, and have been shown to quickly stop if patients cease taking the medication, as well as to soon disappear in cases where the medication is continued. If you experience any or all of these side effects when using Simvastatin, contact your doctor.

There are also some extremely rare side effects that have been seen to occur with Simvastatin use. These include symptoms of allergies including swelling of the throat or tongue, difficulty with breathing, severe abdominal or muscular pain, or pain whilst urinating. If you experience any or all of these side effects whilst using Simvastatin, seek urgent medical attention.
