Metronidazole

Metronidazole – Powerful Bacterial Vaginosis Treatment

Available as an easy to manage tablet, metronidazole is a fast way to treat bacterial vaginosis. Within as little as a week, this medicine can clear the infection and allow women to return to their normal, healthy sex lives.

Bacterial vaginosis is a bacterial infection of the vagina that is most common in sexually active women and results in a range of embarrassing symptoms. The most common symptoms that women may observe include a ‘fishy’ odour and discharge from the vagina that varies in consistency throughout the menstrual cycle. Whilst in many cases bacterial vaginosis is a nuisance infection, occasionally it can make women more susceptible to sexually transmitted infections and cause complications during pregnancy.

Taking metronidazole rids women of this unwanted infection and returns them to full sexual health remarkably quickly.

Metronidazole Benefits

Metronidazole is an antibiotic that is used to treat a number of infections. It is clinically proven to be effective in cases of bacterial vaginosis and taking the tablet as prescribed is a good way to clear this troubling infection permanently.

Clinical studies have shown that taking this drug to treat a bacterial infection can be as much as 94% effective. Usually, a single course is all that is required, curing the ailment within as little as a week. This rids women of both the difficult symptoms of the illness and the infection itself.

Does Metronidazole Work To Cure Bacterial Vaginosis?

Bacterial vaginosis is a bacterial infection that is most likely to occur in sexually active women between the ages of 15 and 45. The increase in the number of unwanted bacteria in the vagina leads to symptoms including a fishy odor, loss of acidity and irregular vaginal discharge.

Metronidazole is an antibiotic. This means that it blocks some of the functions of bacterial cells, eventually resulting in their death. By killing the bacteria that causes the bacterial vaginosis infection, the medicine returns women to full health and lets them get on with their lives without embarrassing and uncomfortable symptoms.

Who Should Take Metronidazole?

Metronidazole is used to treat a wide range of infections, but is offered here for use in cases of bacterial vaginosis. The majority of women suffering from bacterial vaginosis can take a course of metronidazole to clear their infection, providing that they are not pregnant or breast-feeding.

Who Should Not Take Metronidazole?

Although most people can use metronidazole, there are some instances where it is not recommended. If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, you should not use the medicine. If you suffer from stomach or intestinal problems, epilepsy, liver disease or nervous system disorders, metronidazole should not be used.

In addition, you should check the ingredients of the tablet and, if you are allergic to any of the contents, should seek an alternative medication.

How To Take Metronidazole

For the treatment of bacterial vaginosis, metronidazole is usually prescribed as 400mg tablets to be taken twice daily for seven days. You can take the tablet with or without food and water, but patients have reported a feeling of nausea if it is taken on an empty stomach.

As with any antibiotic, you should aim spread the doses evenly and to take the tablets at approximately the same time every day. Spacing out the tablets correctly helps to ensure that the level of antibiotic in your system remains consistent at all times.

You should also always ensure that you complete the full course of metronidazole as prescribed, even if your symptoms disappear and you feel better. If you stop taking the tablet too early, the bacterial vaginosis infection may not be completely cleared and symptoms may subsequently return.

Metronidazole Side Effects

Generally, metronidazole is very well tolerated by the body and side effects are uncommon and usually mild. This is not the case if patients drink alcohol while taking Metronidazole; YOU MUST NOT DRINK ALCOHOL WHILE TAKING THIS MEDICINE.

Some patients have reported minor side effects such as headaches, loss of appetite, nausea, a rash, and sometimes a metallic taste in the mouth. These side effects usually disappear quickly, but if you are concerned about any of these side effects or if they persist, contact your doctor.

In some very rare cases, more serious side effects have been observed. These include numbness or tingling of the extremities and seizures. In addition, you may encounter symptoms of an allergic reaction to the tablet, which might include shortness of breath or facial swelling. If you do encounter any of these side effects, stop taking metronidazole and seek urgent medical attention immediately.
