Mercilon

Mercilon – Dependable Low Dose Oral Contraception

Used by women worldwide to protect themselves against unplanned pregnancy, Mercilon is one of a number of medicines that are collectively referred to as ‘the pill’. Taking this pill throughout your menstrual cycle is a convenient, reliable way to make it almost impossible that you can fall pregnant.

Two hormones in the body control the female menstrual cycle and combined contraceptive pills get their name because they contain a combination of synthesized versions of both of these substances. By artificially altering the process of the menstrual cycle, the chance of conceiving a child is dramatically reduced to being incredibly unlikely.

With lower levels of active ingredients than other similar medicines, Mercilon allows women to enjoy great contraception without related side effects.

Mercilon Benefits

Mercilon allows women to engage in a sex life without the risk of unplanned pregnancy. Studies have shown that this medicine works in over 99% of cases, meaning that less than one in a hundred women taking the pill become pregnant. In addition, the synthetic hormones in this pill can help to alleviate the symptoms of irregular, painful or particularly heavy periods.

In contrast to other oral contraceptives, Mercilon contains a much lower level of synthetic oestrogen and, as a result, is proven to result in fewer side effects. Women who are particularly sensitive to oestrogen can safely and comfortable use this pill as a long-term contraceptive.

Does Mercilon Work And Stop Conception?

The menstrual cycle takes place in a woman every 28 days to prepare for the possibility of conceiving a child. Halfway through the monthly cycle, an egg is released from one of the ovaries and begins to travel towards the womb via the fallopian tubes. If sperm reaches this egg, it may become fertilised and attempt to bed itself into the womb lining to begin its gradual growth. This is how pregnancy begins. If the egg remains unfertilised at the end of the 28 days, it is removed from the body along with the womb lining – this is a period.

This whole process is regulated by the levels of two hormones in the body, oestrogen and progesterone, which fluctuate throughout the 28 day cycle. By artificially altering the levels of these hormones, the likelihood of pregnancy can be reduced.

Mercilon contains two active ingredients, ethinylestradiol and desogestrel, which are synthetic versions of oestrogen and progesterone respectively. The introduction of these substances stops the ovaries from releasing an egg, thickens mucus around the cervix to stop sperm from entering, and thins the womb lining to stop an egg from settling in.

Together, these changes make women very unlikely to become pregnant.

Who Can Take Mercilon?

Mercilon can be taken by any woman over the age of 18 who requires a reliable oral contraceptive pill and is particularly well-suited for use in women who have encountered side effects when using other oral contraceptives. The pill can also be offered to some women who suffer from painful, heavy or irregular periods.

Who Should Not Take Mercilon?

Mercilon should not be used by any woman who is pregnant or thinks she may be pregnant, and is not suggested for women who are breast-feeding. Our doctors will also need to know if you have a history of circulation problems, heart conditions, gynaecological cancer or blood clots.

How To Take Mercilon

Mercilon contains 20mcg of ethinylestradiol and 150 mcg of desogestrel, a considerably lower dose of synthetic oestrogen than most contraceptives.

Ideally, you should start taking Mercilon on the first day of your period, in which case you will be protected immediately. You can begin taking the tablet any time within the first 5 days of your period, although you will need to use another form of contraception for 7 days. After this, you should take one tablet every day at approximately the same time until the course of 21 tablets is complete. You will then take a break from the medicine for 7 days, allowing your body to remove the synthetic hormones from your body. You may experience light bleeding during this time, although you will still be protected against pregnancy.

If you miss a single dose of this pill (ie. one day), take the missed tablet as soon as possible and then resume your normal dosage from the next day. If you miss more than one dose, you should resume taking the pill immediately but you will not be protected against pregnancy for the next seven days.

Mercilon Side Effects

Since Mercilon contains a far lower dosage of synthetic oestrogen than most contraceptives, most women who take this pill do not encounter any side effects. In a few cases, women have reported headaches, breast tenderness, weight gain or nausea, although these have been seen to disappear with continued use. If you are concerned about the side effects of Mercilon, contact your doctor.
