One egg is released from one of the two ovaries about halfway through this cycle and, if the egg is fertilised by a sperm, the woman will become pregnant. If the egg remains unfertilised at the end of the 28 day cycle, the egg and womb lining is removed from the body as a period.
This entire process is dependant on the changing levels of two hormones in the female body, called oestrogen and progesterone. By artificially altering these hormone levels, contraceptive pills can alter the process of conception.
Logynon ED is a combined contraceptive pill which contains a combination of two synthetic hormones – ethinylestradiol, a synthetic oestrogen, and levonorgestrel, a synthetic progesterone. The pills are taken throughout your menstrual cycle and contain varying levels of synthetic hormone. As a result, no egg is released from the ovaries, cervical mucus thickens to stop the penetration of sperm, and the lining of the womb thins to prevent a fertilised egg from developing.
Who Can Take Logynon ED?
Logynon ED can be used by any woman over the age of 18 who requires a form of oral contraception, particularly if they are concerned about the side effects of monophasic pills. The medicine can also be offered to some women who suffer from heavy, painful or irregular periods.
Who Should Not Take Logynon ED?
Clearly, Logynon ED should never be used by any woman who is pregnant or believes that she may be pregnant. In some cases, this form of contraceptive may not be suited to women with a history or high risk of blood clots, gynaecological cancers, heart conditions or circulation issues.
How To Take Logynon ED
Logynon ED is a triphasic contraceptive pill, which means that the tablets contain varying amounts of ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel. These tablets are coloured differently to indicate dosage – some are light brown, some are ochre and some are white. There are also seven tablets that are placebos, containing no active ingredient.
It is very important that the pills are taken in the order that is labelled on the packaging. This ensures that you have the correct amount of synthetic hormone in your body at any given time.
You should begin on the first day of your period by taking a light brown pill as illustrated on the packaging. Then, continue to take the tablets in the correct order every day at approximately the same time, with or without food. You should always take your pill every day, without any breaks. The last seven pills of each packet contain no active ingredient – whilst you are taking these, you may experience light bleeding, known as a ‘withdrawal bleed’. You will still be protected during this 7-day period.
Logynon ED Side Effects
Whilst all prescription medicines may cause minor side effects, the triphasic nature of Logynon ED helps to keep the chance of side effects low. Where in a few instances women have reported mild side effects, these have included headaches, weight gain, nausea and abdominal cramps. As women continue to take the pill, their bodies become more tolerant of the synthetic hormone ingredients.
