How Do ED treatments Work To Achieve An Erection?

When a male becomes aroused, the body naturally releases a substance known as Cyclic GMP, which moves in the blood stream. This substance causes the blood vessels in the penis to dilate, allowing more blood to enter the penis and creating an erection. Later, after intercourse, the Cyclic GMP in the blood stream is broken down by an enzyme called Phosphodiesterase Type 5 (PDE-5). This returns the blood vessels to their normal size, returning the penis to its usual soft, flaccid state.

In the case of men suffering from erectile dysfunction, PDE-5 breaks down Cyclic GMP too quickly, meaning that the penis does not remain erect for the duration of sexual activity, or that it does not become fully erect at any point.

All ED treatments prevent PDE-5 from acting upon Cyclic GMP too quickly and, as a result, can help men to gain an erection and keep it for the required duration. The medicine does not instigate an erection as such, but rather it allows the body to achieve an erection when sexual arousal occurs.

Who Should Not Take ED Treatments?

Those suffering from myeloma, some forms of leukaemia or sickle cell anaemia should also avoid this medicine.

How To Use the ED Trial Pack

Generally speaking our doctors would advise starting with the lower dose trial pack, then working up to a higher strength if necessary. Try the three different medicines on different occasions and see which one works best for you.

Take the medicine 30-60 minutes before sexual activity and remember to use only one tablet within a 24 hour period. Take the tablet with a mouthful of water and for best results avoid taking after a heavy meal or with alcohol.

ED Treatment Side Effects

Whilst side effects may occur when taking ED treatments, they have been shown to cease once patients stop taking the tablets, and equally have often been seen to disappear with continued use. The side-effects vary slightly with each medicine, but the most common side effects include facial flushing, indigestion, headaches and back pain, which can occur anything up to 24 hours after taking the medicines.

In some extremely rare cases, men taking Cialis and or Viagra have encountered a persistent, painful erection which lasts more than 4 hours or a sudden decrease in or loss of vision or hearing ability. If these side effects occur seek immediate medical attention.
