More than 3 in 10 children leaving primary school in the United Kingdom are suffering from Obesity, according to the latest figures supplied by the National Child Measurement Program. The statistics show an average of 33.4 per cent of 10 to 11 year olds suffering from being severely overweight, with specific areas of the country seeing figures as high as 36.8% obesity.
Specifically, the borough of Rochdale has identified a significantly increased risk of children obesity by the time that children leave primary school.
With these shocking new statistics lending even more credibility to the idea that the UK’s children are becoming increasingly overweight, it is important to take a look at the underlying causes of obesity in order to identify potential solutions.
The science of obesity is, in the majority of cases, relatively simple – people are consuming too much fat, without engaging in the amount of exercise required to make use of this substance. As a result, the human body naturally begins to store excess fat as a kind of defence mechanism – it is this stored fat that clogs the arteries, becomes visible on the body, and can lead to very serious complications later in life.
Unfortunately, the patterns of overeating and obesity that occur in adults are quickly learnt by the younger generations. This leads to increased portion sizes, the use of unhealthy food as a reward or distraction, and the development of an unhealthy long-term relationship with food.
