Brevinor Benefits
Foremost, Brevinor is a combined oral contraceptive pill that reduces the likelihood of becoming pregnant as a result of sexual intercourse. Studies have shown that the medication is approximately 97-99% effective in preventing pregnancy, which is more effective than barrier contraception such as condoms.
There are also some side effects to taking Brevinor that women have reported as additional benefits, including less painful periods and a more predictable monthly menstrual cycle in women who had previously encountered irregular bleeding. This medication is also sometimes prescribed as treatment for endometriosis, a condition where cells grow on organs outside the womb.
Whilst Brevinor and other combined contraceptive pills are the most effective form of contraception aside from sterilisation, they are not 100% successful, even if taken at exactly the same time each day. Use of additional methods of contraception such as condoms can reduce the failure rate, and also protect against sexually transmitted diseases.
Does Brevinor Work And Stop Conception?
Taking around 28 days, the monthly menstrual cycle is the female body’s way of preparing for possible pregnancy. Halfway through the cycle, an egg is released from an ovary into the fallopian tube, where it begins to travel towards the womb. If you engage in sexual activity and the sperm released into your body reaches an egg in the fallopian tube, you can become pregnant. If no sperm reaches the egg, it is removed at the end of the 28 day cycle along with the lining of the womb – this is a period.
Two hormones in the body called oestrogen and progesterone control the female menstrual cycle. Brevinor contains synthetic versions of both of these hormones, called ethinylestradiol and norethisterone respectively. These substances override the natural monthly cycle within the body to stop you from becoming pregnant. There are three key effects – no egg is released from the ovaries, the fluid in the neck of the womb thickens so that sperm cannot enter easily, and the lining of the womb does not thicken enough for an egg to grow in it.
Ultimately, Brevinor replicates the process that stops you from conceiving again whilst you are already pregnant. This allows sexual activity to occur with a greatly decreased risk of conception.
Who Can Take Brevinor?
Brevinor is available to all women over the age of 18 who require a reliable form of oral contraceptive. It remains a popular method of preventing pregnancy for its convenience and minimal impact upon weight gain.
Who Should Not Take Brevinor?
Brevinor should not be taken by anybody whose periods have only just started up, or anybody who is currently pregnant or breast-feeding. A doctor may also decide not to offer this contraceptive pill to patients who have suffered from heart problems, stroke, poor circulation or unexplained vaginal bleeding. Women aged over 35 who smoke generally should not take Brevinor or any other combined contraceptive pill.
How To Take Brevinor
Brevinor is prescribed in a 35mcg/0.5 mg dosage, meaning that each tablet contains 35 mcg of ethinylestradiol and 0.5mg of norethisterone. These tablets are packaged with calendar days listed on the packaging to help you keep track of when you take the tablet.
Usually, you should aim to begin taking Brevinor at the start of your 28 day cycle – that is, when you begin a period. Then, you should take one tablet each day at approximately the same time, following the arrows on the packaging until all 21 tablets have been taken. This leaves you with a seven day period in which you should not take the medication and in which you may experience light bleeding. Resume taking Brevinor after this seven day duration.
Please note that if you are changing to Brevinor from another form of contraceptive pill, the method for beginning to take the pill may be different.
If you miss a single dose (ie. one day), you must take the missed tablet as soon as possible and then resume your normal dosage from the next day. If you miss any more than one single dose, you should take your last missed dose immediately and then resume taking Brevinor as normal.
If you miss more than one dose, you will not be protected against pregnancy for the next seven days. If you have less than seven pills left, you should finish the pack and start the next one immediately, missing your seven day break. If you have seven or more pills left, you should finish the pack before having your usual break and starting the next one.
Brevinor Side Effects
Whilst Brevinor is generally well tolerated by the body, some side effects may occur. Side effects are not common, but include nausea, headaches, weight gain, vaginal thrush and breast tenderness or enlargement, although in many cases these side effects disappear over time.
